Business Insurance 101: Protect Your Company from Risks

Business insurance — yeah I’m finally writing about it because I spent way too many nights staring at the ceiling in my shitty Faridabad-style rented apartment here in the States wondering if one more slip-and-fall or one more angry client email was gonna bankrupt me.

    Like seriously. Business Insurance 101

Three years ago I thought “eh I’m small, nothing bad’s gonna happen, I’ll just save the $800 a month.” Famous last words, right?

Spoiler: something bad happened. Business Insurance 101

A delivery guy tripped over a box fan I’d stupidly left in the hallway (don’t ask), sprained his ankle pretty bad, and suddenly I’m staring at a $27,000 medical bill with my name on it. My LLC didn’t mean shit without business insurance. The guy’s lawyer was nicer than my own mother about sending certified mail.

I cried in my car in a Walmart parking lot. True story. Business Insurance 101

    Anyway. Business Insurance 101

Why I Wish Someone Had Screamed “Get Business Insurance” at Me Sooner Business Insurance 101

Look — if you’re running literally anything in the United States right now (food truck, Etsy empire, freelance web design dungeon, pressure-washing side hustle, whatever), you need some form of business insurance to protect your company from risks. Period.

Here’s the bare-minimum stuff I eventually got after the panic-attack era:

    • General Liability Insurance → Covers bodily injury, property damage, advertising injury. This is what would’ve saved my ass with the delivery guy.
    • Commercial Property Insurance → If you have inventory, equipment, or an office (even a home office), this covers fire/theft/flood (sometimes).
    • Workers’ Compensation → Required in almost every state once you have even one employee. I learned this the hard way too when my part-time helper cut his hand on a box cutter.
    • Business Owners Policy (BOP) → Basically bundles general liability + property. Cheaper for small businesses. This is what I have now.

For more official breakdowns I trust → check out the U.S. Small Business Administration’s guide on business insurance types and NAIC’s consumer insurance guide.

My Dumb Mistakes So You Don’t Repeat Them Business Insurance 101

    1. Thinking “I’m too small” = no risk LOL. The smaller you are, the less buffer you have when shit hits.
    2. Buying the absolute cheapest quote online without reading exclusions I did this. My first policy excluded “independent contractors.” Guess who my only helper was? Yup.
    3. Not telling the broker the whole truth about what I actually do If you ever do anything remotely “risky” (pressure washing, food service, anything with ladders), you gotta say it upfront or they’ll deny the claim later.
    4. Waiting until something bad happened to shop around Premiums are way cheaper when you’re not desperate.

Okay… So How Much Does Business Insurance Actually Cost in 2026? Business Insurance 101

From what I’m paying right now in the Midwest (rates vary wildly by state, industry, revenue, claims history):

    • General liability only → $400–$1,200 / year for solo / very small ops
    • BOP (liability + property) → $800–$2,500 / year
    • Workers’ comp → $1,000–$5,000+ depending on payroll and risk class

I use Simply Business and Hiscox — both let you compare quotes fast. No, they didn’t pay me to say that. I just like not being on hold for 47 minutes.

See that? That’s what denial looks like in 4K.

Final Rambling Thoughts Before I Go Pass Out Business Insurance 101

Business insurance isn’t sexy. It’s not fun. It feels like throwing money into a black hole… until the moment you need it, and then it feels like the best money you ever spent.

I protect my company from risks now because I can’t afford not to. My blood pressure can’t afford not to.

If you’re sitting there thinking “ehhh maybe next year,” just do yourself a favor and get at least a basic general liability quote this week. Takes like 8 minutes online.

Don’t be me crying in a Walmart parking lot.

You got this. Hit me in the comments if you’ve ever had an insurance horror story — misery loves company.

Now I’m gonna go drink more coffee and pretend I’m an adult who has his shit together. Peace. ✌️
